Block 3 Section 128 Stirling Park - Howie's & Tradesmen's Camp

Posted on June 20, 2010 at 11:47 PM

A new article has been added to Hidden Canberra http://hiddencanberra.webs.com/SECTION%20ONE%20HOWIE%20&%20TRADESMEN.pdf

SITES OF HOWIE'S SETTLEMENT AND TRADESMEN'S CAMP, WESTLAKE (1922-1930)

The article marks 24 of the sites on Block 3, Section 128 Stirling Park, Yarralumla - former Westlake - Howie's Settlement and the ablution block area of the Tradesmen's Camp.  Also marked is the site ( using gps) of Freeman's Tent Cottage which was probably the original home of the Mess Caterer, Mrs Erikson for the Tradesmen's Camp at Westlake.

With the article are maps that show the site - 1913, 1927 and late 1970s.  The 1927 map shows Stirling Ridge Stirling Park, Yarralumla as the original chosen site for a new Governor General's residence.  By the 1970s Stirling Ridge is one of the two possible sites chosen for a new Prime Minister's Lodge - the other is Attunga Point - the old Quarry area.

Included are photographs of the area taken in early June 2010 and some of the historical photographs of the Howie's settlement.  Contractor John Howie's men built the Hotel Canberra (1923-1925).
